Sharing your directions to hunt camp used to include hand-drawn maps on napkins, paper plates with last names written on them, and directions including phrases like: “Turn left at the tree, but not the tall tree. Then look for the tree that’s a little greener than the other tree, and it will only be a few miles to camp.”
These directions worked on occasion, but were never ideal and left far too much uncertainty while navigating mountain roads.
onX Hunt takes away the uncertainty of vague directions with Waypoint sharing. When you invite your friends and family to hunt with you, you can send them your exact position on the map. And, with Offline Sharing, you can share hunt plans with partners even in areas without service.
Watch below for a quick demo of how Offline Sharing works.
This Is How You Share a Waypoint
We’ll show you how to send your hunting partners Map Markups like Waypoints, whether you’re in an area with or without service.
Send a Waypoint (With Service or Without)
Follow along to collaborate with hunting partners:
Select the Waypoint(s) You Want to Share
Tap the Waypoint, or any other type of Map Markup, on the map.
- Selecting Multiple Items at Once: If you need to send multiple Map Markups, head to “My Content,” tap “Select,” and choose the individual items you need to share. You can select individual items either by tapping those items directly on the map or by swiping the “Select Content” card back up to the top of your screen and selecting the checkboxes next to the item name(s).
- Sharing Folders: If you keep your Map Markups organized in folders and want to share an entire folder of content, tap into “My Content,” tap on the ellipsis (three dots) next to the folder name, and select “Share Folder.” Note, you’ll only see this option for folders you’ve created yourself.
Select the “Share” Button
Tap the “Share” button at the bottom of the screen.
- If sharing a folder, you can choose whether you want your recipient(s) to be a ‘viewer’ or a ‘contributor’ (the former provides recipients read-only access to folder content and the latter allows them to add and remove folder content).
Choose How You Want To Share
A card will pop up giving you the option to “Share With a Link” or “Share Nearby.” In areas with cell service, choose “Share With a Link” and tap “Next.”
- No Service? If you’re offline, choose “Share Nearby.” A card with directions will appear; tap “Next” (your device may then prompt you to allow onX to find other devices). Share Nearby uses Bluetooth to find devices near you. If your recipient is near you and has the same type of device as you (e.g. you both have Androids, or you both have iPhones), you’ll see them appear in the “Share Nearby” card.

Select Your Preferred Delivery Mechanism
A card will pop up allowing you to choose how you want to share the item(s) you’ve selected (e.g. email, text message, etc.). Choose your preferred method.
From there, all you have to do is enter your recipient’s contact info and send. Your hunting companion(s) will receive a link that will drop an exact Waypoint on their map.

Waypoint sharing is also a leading safety function. Let your loved ones know exactly where you will be hunting, or send meet-up points before splitting up to hunt for the day.
